The new legislation coming to effect on 1st July 2010 will require all Fraser Island self-drive tour operators to make several significant changes, the ones that are the most obvious and change the face of touring on Fraser Island are:
1. Modification to vehicles to comply with the new safety regulations:
- gone are the side facing seats, all seats now configured to be front facing
- gone are the bags on the roof, now all bags must be inside the vehicle
2. Legislation now requires self-drive Fraser Island tours to be in a “Tag-Along” fashion:
- now there must be a “lead vehicle” with a registered / qualified tour guide / driver
- 3 additional vehicles (4 total w/ lead vehicle) will make up the “tag along”, max 7 per vehicle.
- The 4 vehicles w/ guide will need to stay together while on the island
Nomads Fraser Island Tours vehicles have undergone overhauls to meet the required criteria. We have also retired all of the old vehicles and purchased replacement vehicles. Luggage cages were fabricated and installed in all our cars to ensure our passengers safety.
The Tag-tour lead vehicles (late model Land cruiser Prado) are equipped with satellite phone, cable winch, recovery kit and trauma first aid kit. These lead vehicles will be driven by an appointed guide with a maximum of 7 passengers.
Nomads professional guides have an extensive knowledge of the Island and an experience enabling them to ensure time on Fraser Island is maximised and safety is assured. We have chosen a fun crew to ensure our guests have both an informative, safe and enjoyable time on the Island.
Our guides will lead customers through one of the world’s most pristine and unique environments. With its lush rainforest’s, towering hardwood forests, endless golden beaches and crystal clear freshwater lakes and streams, Fraser Island is a precious natural wonder. This stunning world heritage listed paradise is also home to Australia’s most pure Dingo blood line as well as many other species of Australian wildlife.
Nomads camp site on the island will be at the K’Gari camp site, we will have a dedicated Nomads camp-site and a range of extra facilities that our customers will really enjoy:
- Our camp-site is centrally located, close to must see sites such as Eli Creek and the Maheno ShipWreck…great location!
- Sheltered on the shady beach side base camp with permanent 10 man tents (sleeping maximum of 8 pax) …no more having to put up tents at night!
- Features a covered meal preparation area with permanent BBQ cooking facilities and wash up area…all crockery, cutlery and utensils provided!
- Access to fresh water showers and toilets …..obviously a big plus!!!
- A fire pit for nightly wood burning fires (only location this is permitted on the island, subject EPA) plus… picnic tables and benches.
We are privileged to have been granted permission to locate our Nomads camp on land owned by the islands traditional owners, the Batjala people. A number of the elders live on the island and will often share stories and insights into Aboriginal culture with their guests. The camp site is owned and staffed by the traditional land owners and our guests may benefit from traditional story telling or activities.
