Maheno Shipwreck

Shipwreck on the East coast of Fraser Island, ...

The Maheno was built in Scotland in 1904, and after a few years of trans-atlantic crossings, The Maheno was used as a hospital ship in World War One.

After being used during the war as a hospital ship a Sydney shipping company purchased it for trans-Tasman journies. Eventually it was bought by a Japanese shipping company, unfortunately during their trip back to Osaka in Japan the Maheno was hit by a cyclone and ran aground on Fraser Islands 75 mile beach, where it still rests today.

The Maheno Shipwreck on Fraser Island is now a popular tourist stop on 75 mile beach and is found just north of Eli Creek.

Maheno is, interestingly enough, a New Zealand Maori word meaning ‘island’, ironic really that the last resting place of The Maheno was an Island!
