Lake McKenzie is probably the most visited natural site on Fraser Island and when you see the pure clear water and unbelievably white sand you’ll instantly know why!
The lake here is ‘perched’, meaning it contains only rainwater and it’s not fed by streams and doesn’t flow to the ocean. The sand at the bottom prevents the rainwater from draining away. The sand also acts as a water filter which keeps it so clear, however being such pure water not much life survives here.
The sand is very fine at Lake McKenzie and is so soft to walk on, it can also be used as a very light exfoliant and cleans jewellery too!
There are great camping facilities here, each site having its own camp fire with wood provided. Toilets and cold showers are nearby. This is a Fraser Island activity that’s one at the top of everyones must -see list on any Fraser Island Tours.
