75 Mile Beach, Fraser Island

by admin on 2 March 2010

A recommended thing to do on all Fraser Island Tours - 75 mile beach, not that you can miss out on it anyway as you have to drive on it to get to pretty much everywhere on Fraser Island! Make sure you pay attention to the 4WD safety tips given to you when you hire your vehicle as driving on sand is a bit different to tarmac!

75 Mile Beach, or 120km beach, for those who prefer, is as it says, a stretch of sandy beach continuing for around 75 miles along the East Coast of Fraser Island.  This part of the coast isn’t ideal for swimming as the tiger sharks have claimed it as their own, but with plenty of freshwater lakes and the champagne pools to swim in, this isn’t too much of a disappointment.

75 Mile Beach is popular amongst four wheel drivers as it is the one place on Fraser Island where you can put your foot down as the speed limit increases here.  However, do be careful of the washouts and also any impending aircraft waiting to land because this stretch of sand also acts as a landing strip for planes and helicopters for those lucky enough to see Fraser Island from the air.

One really important thing to note, apart from the possiblity of planes landing, is that normal road rules apply!
